Inti Raymi on June 24 of each year (in Quechua language festival of the Sun) was an ancient Andean religious ceremony in honor to Sun God that took place every winter solstice in the Andes. In the Inca time the Inti Raymi was the most important of the four festivals celebrated in Cuzco (as recounted by the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega) and indicated half of the year and this was realized in Aucaypata square (current main square) and covered so far today is the Plaza de San Francisco, attended by over 100,000 people, because the Inti Raymi was the setting for all celebrations of Tawantinsuyo (4 Inca states). The Inca sovereign and his relatives were waiting barefoot the sunrise on the Plaza. Then the Inca in two gold glasses offered the Chicha.
The party lasted two weeks and there were dances and sacrifices, according information the last festival of Inti Raymi was realized in 1535 with the presence of the Inca emperor. In 1572 the Viceroy Francisco Toledo banned the ceremony to consider bad and contrary to Catholicism, but this one was carried on clandestinely in Cusco. In 1944 Faustino Espinoza Navarro made a historical reconstruction of the Inti Raymi chronic based on the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, which refers to the religious ceremony. From that date on forward the festival of Inti Raymi is again a public event. Currently the festival is held in three different places like:
CEREMMONY & OFFERING AT QORICANCHA PALACE: In Inca times after the ceremony, the Inca moved to Qoricancha temple followed by the population to worship the sun, the chiefs gave the offerings brought in from their land. At present, the Inti Raymi ceremony begins at Qoricancha because this place would have been the sun temple in the Inca period.
CEREMMONY & OFFERING AT MAIN SQUARE: After the ceremony at the Qoricancha people headed to the main square, as this was the center and capital of the empire, where there was the sacrifice of llamas to the new fire that was lit using as mirror the priest Golden Bracelet, the meat of the animal was divided between the people and a lot of chicha beer. Today the festival continues with the same customary that in Inca times, with a ceremony at the Main Square where the second scene is.
CEREMMONY & OFFERING AT SACSAYHUAMAN: Finally, the central and main ceremony takes place at the Fortress of Sacsayhuaman to 3 km away outside the City. For the ceremony of Inti Raymi arrived the 4 representatives of 4 states (tahuantinsuyo) to rhythm of traditional music of Cusco, dressed in their best clothes and accompanied by noble and population. The tahuantisuyo were the 4 regions where the Inca Empire was divided, surface covering nearly half of South America. At present these 4 groups walk on the esplanade of Sacsayhuaman, to meet the Inca who goes to the middle of the ceremony to worship the sun with the sacrifice of the llama (today this is symbolic sacrifice), which is the image of life and purity, which represent the purification of the earth and is performed to ward off evil spirits, to bring good harvests for the coming year.
